There’s a saying in the trucking world: “A good driver never breaks down on the side of the road. He manages to get off safely before anything worse happens.” And that saying is 100% true.

Why? Because stopping on the shoulder is not just dangerous. It’s an open invitation for towing scammers, the most organized mafia in the transportation industry.

When a truck breaks down on the highway within minutes, a tow truck shows up. You didn’t call them. But somehow, they already knew.

HOW THE SCAM WORKS

They act like they’re there to help. They tell you the truck needs towing. Even if it doesn’t. They NEVER tow to your mechanic. They always take your truck to THEIR yard (called inbound).
Once it's there, they charge what they want. You can't touch your equipment until you pay.
They refuse credit cards (because you can dispute charges). They want only: Zelle, EFS codes, cash, or a blank check.
If the truck can’t be fixed roadside, they offer a “transload” move your load to their trailer, tow your truck, tow your trailer, tow your load again. This bill can easily hit $25,000+. And insurance? They usually pay for it. That’s why they don’t care.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Most drivers call the police, but they’re told: “Sorry, this is a civil matter.” But here's what you should know:
• Ask to speak with the police supervisor or chief.
• Tell them that no one can take your equipment without your consent.
• Police can and should contact the towing company and protect you from extortion.

NEVER LEAVE YOUR TRUCK

If you're still inside, they cannot legally tow your unit. Even if they try to threaten or rush you STAY IN THE CAB. They cannot hook or move a truck with the driver inside. That alone can buy you time to call the right help.

WHAT’S THEIR REAL BUSINESS?

Here’s the truth. Many of these towing companies make more money selling your truck than towing it.
• They hold it.
• You can’t pay or dispute the charges.
• After 30 days, they file paperwork to claim ownership.
• Then they sell your truck, trailer, or load legally.
This is the most vicious, predatory system in the trucking industry. You’re alone. You’re broken down. You’re tired. And they use that against you. Be wise. Be prepared. And NEVER give your keys, title, or trust to a stranger with a tow hook.
